ELIXIRS down from 5A to connect to make SCUT, as shown below. The other option is playing it down to to connect and turn RIB into RIBS, but that is both worse strategically and fewer points.
Why is it worse strategically?
Playing it in the first spot essentially opens up two nice moves. The first one is obvious, the triple word score. In addition, however, it puts the valuable X tile next to a double word score, so with any decent tiles if my opponent uses the triple word score, I can get 30 points by making a move parallel to the X. If he uses the X, then I have the triple word.
Furthermore, playing ELIXIRS down to RIBS opens one spot, and that spot is very ugly, because it would leave the I hanging right next to the triple word score, just asking for a juicy vertical play.
